Pöllö Back to main
X.X.1996 - Nokian Seurakuntakeskus, Nokia, Finland
This was obligatory for my confirmation school class. Only thing I remember
from this one is the song "Hammasraudat". The band has not existed
for ages...
?
The Offspring
22.3.1997 - Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki, Finland
I had just gone through the Ofsspring/Green Day punk rock revolution and was
stoked! First real concert in my life, screamed my teenage lungs out in the
front row.
****
No Man's Band
3.3.2001 - Nokian seurakuntakeskus, Nokia, Finland
Gospel metal festival :D I went to see this because I saw that the bassist of
NMB was wearing a "Bad Religion"-shirt in a photograph (that's what
my brother told me). A "Bad religion"-shirt!

Maija Vilkkumaa
8.11.2003 - Iisoppi, Nokia, Finland
Not really my most favourite kind of music, but the band was tight!
***
Disco Ensemble
9.1.2004 - YO-talo, Tampere, Finland
ZuH stagedived on me a 100 times. No wonder, the 30-people pit and the band
were awesome! I had finally found a Finnish band that was making my kind of
music and rocked live!

Disco Ensemble
10.1.2004 - Semifinal, Helsinki, Finland
I was still worn out from yesterday, too loud for the small venue.

Disco Ensemble
17.2.2004 - On the Rocks, Helsinki, Finland
Me and ZuH were the only ones rocking on the rocks and got to choose the encore
song for the band. Great sounds!

I was a rock police. Sounds were great, the band almost as good as well.

Some gala night with a huge distance from the crowd and terrible technical
difficulties with the equipment. Not their kind of gig.

Disco Ensemble
12.3.2005 - Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland
Things had really changed. "First Aid Kit" had reached the charts and
suddenly everybody wanted to see DE. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.
Intimate, full-packed, and amazing feeling throughout the grand old Tavastia.
Rocking all around the floor and the stage.

14.7.2005 - YO-talo, Tampere, Finland
Awesome, just awesome... like the one in 2004 here, but with a LOT more people
with a purpose to party hard.

A Wilhelm Scream + Lagwagon
21.1.2006 - Schlachthof, Wiesbaden, Germany
Finally something else :) We (me and ZuH) just had to see at least one of our
favourite bands and so we traveled abroad. We were fortunate, because two of
our favourites were touring together in Europe. "These guys know all the
words" said the lead singer (Nuno) of AWS. Lagwagon was solid as ever
although the lead singer (Joey) had partly lost his voice and they almost had
to cancel the show. Drumming of Dave Raun is just amazing to see and listen. Me
and Juha were so stoked after this - we also had the best afterparty ever with
Uwe and Karl Heinz from Wiesbaden.
*****
Millencolin
4.3.2006 - Nosturi, Helsinki, Finland
Our skate punk neighbors rocked Nosturi after almost a ten-year brake in
touring in Finland! They should have played more "good old stuff",
however :). Nevertheless, the sold-out pit consisting mostly of 20-to-30 year
olds was CRAZY and my feet were so sore the next day.
****
Disco Ensemble
1.4.2006 - Klubi, Tampere, Finland
That fucking column again. And some bouncer on the stage pushing everybody
who's trying to make a stagedive on to the people in the front not expecting it
at all. How stupid and dangerous. Band was great again, though...

23.4.2007 - Nosturi, Helsinki, Finland
Welcome to Finland, Lagwagon. The best gig of my life, period. The lead singer
(Joey) liked to see us so much too that he dived on the crowd and hugged people
that got on stage. Perfect setlist - all of my favourites. I rocked so hard...
still makes me smile. Check this out and you'll sense a part of it:

Disco Ensemble + Millencolin
5.8.2007 - Ankkarock, Vantaa, Finland
DE got great stage energy and couple of new songs, but too much teenagers in
the crowd - first time I felt that I really didn't belong there anymore.
Millencolin draw those 20-to-30 olds to rock again. Fun, although festival gigs
are always festival gigs. You are not in the same "place" with the
bands.
***
Disco Ensemble
8.9.2007 - Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland
I was pretty drunk here. Bouncer got me when I tried to stagedive. I
was probably just trying to show off for the youngsters: "This is how we
used to rock back in the old days".

4.11.2007 - Brixton Academy, London, UK
On tour with ZuH again. First chance to see the most important band of my life.
Somewhat sloppy show, as it often has been the case on this millennium.
However, I have two words to sum the highlight: THE DECLINE!!! (Their 18-minute
masterpiece)

Two and half hours of punk rock! The drummer was so wasted afterwards :D They
even started to run out of songs, but just wanted to give everything to us -
the 30-year old fans in Finland that they rarely meet. Actually and
unfortunately, it turned out to be the last time to see this band live (RIP
Tony Sly).

21.5.2008 - Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland
New more poppy record ("Magic Recoveries") just got out, new teenage
fans screaming in the front row. I was not expecting much, but they really made
it. Actually, this was one of the best gigs by them ever - and I may leave it
like that. Thank you so much DE. I'm glad that you seem to make music you like
yourself. I've gotten my share.

Jaakko

30.6.2008 - Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland
Not even close to the Nosturi gig, but still a lot of good songs and nice

10.7.2008 - Nosturi, Helsinki, Finland
Keep them Californians coming! Although Nosturi was just half-full, these

11.7.2009 - Õllesummer, Tallinn, Estonia
Although this was not as feeling-packed as the one three years before, they
really conquered the main stage. Noble and powerful band.

25.9.2009 - Nosturi, Helsinki, Finland
Time to raise the stakes - the most aggressive and hardcore gig I had ever been

27.10.2009 - Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki, Finland
One of the most badly organized events I've ever been to. It was such a pain

part in the biggest circle pit I've ever been involved in. Nevertheless,
Kaapelitehdas with its horrible acoustics is banned from now on!

13.4.2010 - Magnet, Berlin, Germany
Again traveling with ZuH and enjoying Germany and a great gig in a small and

Finland just to see them. Good memories from this one.

9.7.2010 - Ruisrock, Turku, Finland
Festival gigs are festival gigs - I do not warm up even when I get to see three
great bands. Especially in this case. Ruisrock = walking + fences + mud + dirt
+ expensive monopoly beer in pig pens + more dirt + drunk and annoying
teenagers + more mud + more walking. Jaakko & Jay also got fed up with the
stupidly organized fences and adviced people to tear them down to be able to
hear their show. Possibly my last Finnish rock festival. Please bands, come to
Õllesummer from now on...

I haven't been listening to their new stuff that much, but this gig really

9.12.2012 - Nosturi, Helsinki, Finland
Brutal, solid, lively, true. You have to see this band yourself to know what it

6.4.2013 - Sauna of Kulosaari mansion, Helsinki, Finland
"Haistoin kerran näätää" LP release party gig combined with a sauna

the group is so absorbing that you just suddenly find yourself tapping your
feet to the rhythm of "trauma-blues". Keep it up, guys!

12.4.2013 - SO36, Berlin, Germany

13.4.2013 - Gruenspan, Hamburg, Germany

5.7.2013 - Õllesummer, Tallinn, Estonia
Early gig with just a handful of listeners, but it didn't bother this

pushing on - in the end they even ran out of songs. Very much enjoyable!

Pet
Shop Boys
5.7.2013 - Õllesummer, Tallinn, Estonia
Almost one hour late and without apology started playing a montage of really
bad songs (their own, apparently - most of their hits are covers of others).
This "music" was backed up by a stage show that mostly raised
feelings of shared shame. Estonians seemed to enjoy it, though (Apparently
"Go West" was a big hit during the times of Estonian Sovereignty
Declaration more than 20 years ago). Let it rest in peace now, please.

22.2.2014 - Béi Chéz Heinz, Hannover, Germany
5th time with ZuH - plan: two AWS gigs in a row. Low-roofed small basement
venue transformed into a sauna when the band started playing - blazing as always.
Crowd-surfed and almost ended up hitting my head to the disco ball. Had so much
fun in the front row, and had a good time chatting with Trevor after the show.
Brilliant.

Sólstafir
+ Katatonia
20.9.2014 - The Circus, Helsinki, Finland
I was looking forward to Sólstafir, but it was kind of disappointment - the
singer thought that he should be the star of the show and not the band. The
band seemed to be silently annoyed by him too. Awkward. Katanoia, although in
times a bit monotonous, was the star of the evening for sure, and they enjoyed
what they were doing. Good sounds in The Circus once again.

Lagwagon
30.3.2015 - SO36, Berlin, Germany
After the release of Hang, one their best albums ever, we had to catch them with ZuH. It was so hot
and crowded at SO36 that it was difficult to move and breath, but it was a very nice gig. The stage was quite
far away from the front row and there were bouncers in between, so it wasn't as intimate as I had hoped.
Joe was sick, coughing, and was just standing trying to pull through the set. He made it, thumbs up for him!

Lagwagon
31.3.2015 - Conne Island, Leipzig, Germany
It was so hard to find this place, but it really was extraordinary. Packed with past teenagers from the nineties, this
time it was really intimate. Really nice sounds and great atmosphere that was boosted with shredded newspaper
confetti flying everywhere (luckily it didn't catch a fire!). Lots of stagediving (including Joey) and nice feeling
throughout the set. So happy to have experienced this one!
